I haven’t written one of these for a while. These are the posts where I vent on a topic. Mostly humourous, occasionally telling, here are a few things which grind my gears listening to podcasts.
I really don’t need to hear the theme music for 90 seconds. The fast forward button is there for a reason – to skip the music.
Learn how to fade your theme music out. Abrupt. Stops. Make. The. Podcast. Sound. Amateur.
Balance speakers’ voices. ONE sounding LIKE THEY’re shouting WHILE the OTher guests ARE qUIET AND TouGH TO HEAR makes for a very uneven experience.
Don’t be afraid to break things up a bit. Use stabs when you want to give the listener a break. A music bed can be interesting.
Don’t use too much music and novelty sound effects. Music and sound effects are seasonings – add them to make your podcast stand out. Over season and it’s impossible to enjoy.
Show notes are REALLY useful to share stuff. Please take care over them.
Echoooooo in the speakers recordings is enough tooooooo make me turn the podcast off.
Diversity matters. Diversity of thought, content, style, and guests.
Tell me – what grinds your gears about podcasts?
