I should have had a second cataract surgery yesterday morning. Fully prepped, they did a final check and found the lens they needed wasn’t in stock. They had one lens but, if for any reason it couldn’t be used – it was damaged when they inserted it, it didn’t unroll properly, etc. – they didn’t want to be in a position where they couldn’t complete the surgery.
In a world where we have reason to believe we can get anything on demand, at a time we want, I was initially frustrated. But then I thought back and realised I was lucky to be having this operation at all, at no cost to me, and I wasn’t in a position to be complaining that it might be in the New Year now.
So this is a thank you to the NHS and a recognition that we are incredibly lucky to have it in the UK.
I fully understand what you mean, but don’t forget that you pay for the NHS every day of the year through your taxes. Hence, “…at no cost to me” is not completely accurate !
I guess that you’ll be having a week or two away from blogging over the festive season, so I will take this opportunity to wish you a good break and hopefully a successful operation in early 2024.
Will you be at Brisbane Road for the big derby on Boxing Day ?

Thanks Paul. I understand what you mean about cost. I was in the US recently and someone there told me their cataract surgery cost them $3000 per eye so I’m thankful for a universal system.
And I’ll not be at Orient…I’ll be at Millwall to watch QPR!
