Building relationships to learn

A black cat on a desk next to a keyboard, looking at a person with a speech bubble saying, "Can I add you to my LinkedIn Network?"

Someone commented to me recently how they didn’t feel they had networks or communities to learn with. In a relatively large organisation, they were part of many teams and groups but they didn’t feel they were learning. We talked this through and reframed the question to find out the networks and communities they learnt from.

Doing this they recognised they WERE in communities and networks but, in their haste to be connected to the work, they had missed the essential element of the connections and that was with the people there.

The nature of relationships in the digital age is different and the places where you learn are just shapes and labels you place around things. Relabel them in names YOU want to use and you’ll craft more opportunities.
