Putting time aside

A round clock with black numbers on a white background hangs on a white wall. The time on the clock is ten to six.

I’ve been putting time aside for some writing recently and was writing last week when I realised I hadn’t written anything but had, in fact:

  • Searched my notes for the chapter I was writing
  • Opened a half dozen tabs with content and context
  • Opened a couple of PowerPoint decks with the content on
  • Looked for a Post-It note
  • Realised my desk was a bit messy so tidied it and put the bits in the bin and recycling box
  • Realised I had to put the bin out
  • Put the bin out
  • Went back in and realised the recycling box needed emptying
  • Put the recycling out
  • Found an empty jar in the recycling so checked I had more in a kitchen cupboard
  • Tidied a kitchen cupboard
  • Added the item to the shopping list
  • Realised I hadn’t checked for something on the shopping list in the bathroom cabinet
  • Searched and then tidied a bathroom cabinet
  • Found a set of nail clippers I’d been looking for
  • Trimmed a toenail
  • Was reminded I had been asked to send something to a hospital
  • Went out and posted a letter
  • Listened to a track from a new album on the way to the post box
  • Came back and read four reviews about the album
  • Went back to my open tabs wondering why I’d opened some of them

Is it just me, or does this happen to other people?
