Directions

Here’s another #IWD2025 post, this time from Fran Harrison. Fran is a learning technology strategist and always has smart things to say.

You’re walking along your local high street, when someone approaches you and asks for directions to the nearest Post Office.

“Sure – head back down the hill and over the blue bridge – there’s a feeding point for the river birds on the right side! You must take a look.

“Keep on until you reach the bridge – it was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, we’re quite proud of it.

“Then head right up the hill, try and resist the aromas from the wonderful little Greek restaurant. If you fancy a really great coffee and homemade cake, there’s a lovely café just off to the right too.

“Keep going, and you’ll find the Post Office on the right.”

You wouldn’t do it to the poor person whose single goal is probably to post a parcel.

Do you do it to your learners?

Your learners have a goal in mind. Don’t distract them with stuff they don’t need to know. Get them to where they need to be, via the most efficient route possible.

I love this post, if only because I see myself doing it so often. Sometimes there is a need for context, but it’s the context of the user, not mine!
