I haven’t written a ‘moany’ post like this for over a year so here’s another in the occasional series when I have a vent. This one is especially hot right now as I KEEP hearing about ’embedding’.
A one day team building event offsite isn’t “embedding collaboration.” It doesn’t change reporting structures, reward systems, or the underlying dynamics driving competition between teams and managers.*
A slide at the end of the deck called “Next Steps”, a poster in the shared kitchen we can see on Teams, or a line in the proposal are not embedding.
Assuming that by creating the new Teams channel to host all the documents, posters, quizzes and graphics will embed the concept in the workplace.
If you hope people remember this, it’s not embedding. See also expect people to remember.
Changing the ‘comms’ box on a Gantt chart to green is comms theatre, not confirmation the message is embedded..
Induction programmes don’t embed culture. New starters experience an event and then join teams where the actual culture is.
Mugs, hoodies and lanyards are not embedding. It’s stationery.
*See also expecting managers to “role model the behaviours” when they weren’t part of the conversation and haven’t changed their own practice.
How can I make sure that this post is embedded in your workflow? Let me know in the comments.
