Information flows

Around my micro organisation, there are dozens of flows of information. Between me and my peers, across different organisations, my contractors, and my customers. In a large company, these will number the thousands and tens of thousands. A lot of hierarchy we have in organisations is simply to manage these information flows.

Who needs to know what, when, and why becomes a power game as people retain discrete bits of information which they present as knowledge. Since THEY have access to it and not everyone, they are valued more.

Have a conversation with your CEOs and senior people. Ask them about where they get their information from. As much as finding out what they get, find out who tells them, why they need it, and how much they really need.

Then go back and look at your training and learning offer. How much of your role is getting the right information to people when they need it, and how much is just tapping into the thousands of information flows?

Be smart, less is more.
