The paradox of voluntary learning

In one of the chapters in Proving Impact I focus on how people enter ‘learning’. If they’re mandated, what will their perspective be, as opposed to the person who went there voluntarily.

The regularly excellent Seth Godin said this last week:

The people most likely to sign up for coaching or additional learning are the folks who are already good at their craft.

If people feel incompetent, the way they’re encouraged, supported and directed towards support will frame their experience of learning, and by association, the learning function. We know mandation doesn’t work – the way you persuade people might be just as unsuccessful.
