Onboarding a new team member

We had a massive failure onboarding a new team member last week.

A solid checklist was in place but there was a terrible mix-up in communication and we weren’t completely ready. Although there had been solid pre-boarding communication, we didn’t have all the paperwork in place and they arrived a bit early.

Their workspace wasn’t ready and we didn’t have all the required equipment ready either.

There was, of course, a great welcome and we were able to direct them to the strategy and aims of the team, our history and what we expected.

We were able to record our expectations of them although they did seem a bit distracted, especially as we introduced them to everyone else in the team.

We did, however, set up strong coaching and mentoring relationships with the team and we’re confident of their future success.

Welcome aboard Harrison, my first grandchild, born 14th August 2024, 5 weeks early.
