Learning hierarchies

Is coaching better than training? Is online eLearning better than mentoring?

The answer is, of course, it depends but there seems to be a few hierarchies in L&D which we unconsciously engage with. Here are a few more:

Leadership learning is more expensive than management training. By using the word leadership we seem to assume there’s a 20% premium in the cost of what we do. This means, in addition to charging 20% more, we will spend 20% more time trying to prove it worked.

Your LMS hosted videos are better than YouTube. The LMS can track which videos you saw so we have a record that you ‘learnt’ which is something we can’t do if you use YouTube. More importantly, the LMS hosted videos have organisational approval and are, therefore, more credible.

Instructor led activity must be more worthwhile than self-determined learning. The fact that someone has been engaged to work with people implies a cost, and, since we want to prove value, we expect people will learn ‘more’ with a facilitator, rather than just doing it on their own.

What do you think?

Is there a hierarchy in delivery methods?

More importantly, do the people we support perceive a hierarchy in the value of support they receive?
