I worked in a family owned business once. The board of seven was made up of four family members and three longstanding and well-regarded and liked, but independent Directors. When decisions came up they went through pretty well unanimously.

Except when they didn’t.

When there was division it was pretty much family vs non-family, and, by virtue of four to three, went along the family route.

In your organisation there will be people in roles and teams who are more invested than you might be. They will have alliances and allegiances which they are maintaining and may make decisions despite there being no apparent sense behind them.

Work isn’t family but the ties and bonds that people build are can be as strong; know how those relationships work.
