Slide etiquette

The image shows the text "SLIDE ETIQUETTE" prominently displayed in white letters over a blurred background featuring a playground slide. The slide appears to be red with green supports, set against a backdrop of green trees and grass in what looks like a park or playground area. The word "SLIDE" is in solid white, while "ETIQUETTE" is outlined in white.

I was transported back last week to my youth.

It was reminiscence about slides in the park. In the 1970 in the UK (yes, he is that old – Ed) the slide we had was a beast. Some two storeys high, set in concrete, we would make it quicker with a bit of furniture polish (sorry Nan), sitting on jumpers to slide off the end at stupid speeds (sorry Mum).

I think about my children – and grandchild – and how panicked I’d be if they were to use something like that. I realise it was stupid, recklessly unsafe, but really REALLY good fun.

Playground equipment has become safer, lower, more uniform, with less capacity to innovate. So children all over the world make daft and dangerous fun, self-determining what they want to do, liaising with peers about how far they can go and push themselves. They assess how well they’ve made the day, setting challenges to go as fast, high, and extreme as they have before. And then further.

This is the passion for learning we erase from people with over managed LMS, over designed solutions, and over mandated requirements.
