AI, Measurement, and Stakeholder Trust

It was fascinating to see the top 5 challenges highlighted at this year’s LPI Learning Live event:

🔹 Technology & AI Integration
🔹 Scalability & Resource Constraints
🔹 Measurement & Evaluation
🔹 Culture & Engagement
🔹 Leadership & Stakeholder Buy-In

The list is unsurprising if you keep an ear to the ground of the L&D profession. Similarly, no surprise perhaps, that AI is still dominating the conversation.

But we still haven’t got a handle on AI. It’s not just about content, whatever the hype might suggest. It was also interesting to see that even OpenAI acknowledge that almost 3/4 of chats in the last year are personal, rather than business related. I saw a line the other day which describes where we are with it:

When anyone can make anything, the instinct becomes to make everything.

That’s where the problems begin.

If you can generate endless ‘stuff’, you don’t need as many people. So we tell ourselves tools will scale the ‘stuff’ and stretch our limited resources.

And if we make more ‘stuff’, we measure more ‘stuff’. Usage stats, logins, completions. Easier to capture, but still not meaningful.

Then we expect people to sit through AI-generated content detached from their reality and hope they’ll be engaged. That’s the wrong problem being addressed, with the wrong fix, and the wrong measurement.

And stakeholders aren’t going to buy-in if they think they can bypass the learning function.

The five priorities are all relevant but we need to address them more than just an ‘AI thing’. The real skill of L&D, as we know, is about understanding what support matters, at the right time, to deliver the best business result.

Not just the new tool.
