People often ask me where my ideas come from. I’ve mentioned ‘bricolage‘ before and the pushing together of different ideas to create new things and seeing what emerges.
I never get asked where I keep my ideas.
I write them down. Not on a laptop, not in an app, but with pen and paper.
I’ve got dozens of A5 notebooks stacked away, filled with drawings, notes, rough shapes and half-legible text covered in arrows. They’re messy, but they’re mine.
And they’re permanent.
Digital platforms can change the rules overnight and, as I wrote on my blog last week, you can lose whole swathes of work at someone else’s whim.
Writing it down is slower, but it lasts.
Don’t be afraid to put pen to paper.
