Strategy (Sponsored by…)

Apparently the new playbook is:

“Don’t do the hard work of strategy. Just rebrand your favourite tools and policies as one.”

Somehow:

  • A few cost stats + a vendor ecosystem + a ‘national framework’ = vision.
  • Process speed is treated as if it automatically produces performance, culture and equity.
  • Governance, power, incentives and behaviour… are a footnote, if that.

Calling something a strategy doesn’t make it one – please note the people who published a new strategy last week. It landed in my inbox and it was underwhelming in the extreme.

If you can’t answer, in one line, “What problem are we solving, for whom, and how will we know it worked?”, you’re not doing strategy – you’re just scaling a solution you liked and hoping no one notices.
