1 in 4

I was in a session last week with 40 other people. There were 11 men in the group – including me – and near the end of the session came an opportunity for people to feed back publicly.

Of course you know what happened before I tell you.

4 men spoke and one woman. So 3 times as many women than men in the room, yet 4 times as many men spoke. The woman who spoke had made a comment earlier in the session so had an implicit permission to engage.

This stuff isn’t difficult to fix.

Men – shut up and listen more.

Women – tell men to shut up and listen more.

I’m chairing sessions this week at the Learning Technologies Autumn Forum. You know what to expect.
