The king is dead

Almost 10 years ago I wrote a blog post which asked people why they used Twitter. Almost 30 replies came in which discussed its reach, engagement, insight, and connection.

It seems Twitter has now also shut off the API access which WordPress uses. This means that my blog posts which would share to Twitter automatically are no longer sent there automatically. Not the end of the world but seeing posts shared on Twitter used to be a highlight and I’d give myself a little clenched fist well done.

One of the best chats on Twitter – the #LDInsight chat – has officially come to an end. Always informative and inspiring, I’ve met and developed relationships with so many people as a result of it over the last 10 years or so.

With limits being placed on what people can read, access to the brilliant Tweetdeck tool being restricted and the drift away from meaningful engagement makes Twitter less useful as a tool.

It finally feels like Twitter is coming to a end for me in any meaningful way. There are fewer people to follow with interesting things to say and I struggle to recommend Twitter to people as a learning tool. I just received a notification that I’d achieved a 12 year anniversary on Twitter – I’m unlikely to make it to 13.

So, if the king of social networking is dead, who is the new king? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Andrew, I’m on Mastodon (@quinnovator@sfba.social). If you go there, do let me know! Not on Instagram, and so doubly not keen on Threads ;). Yep, Twitter the victim of apicide. Miss the ol’ days when robber barons funded libraries and things.

    1. I’m almost certainly not going to start on a new platform, if only because the time and energy to build it will likely be enormous. I’ll most likely stay on LinkedIn since it has become much more interactive in the last few years.
