We’re just back from an incredibly refreshing and relaxing break at a hotel. We were very lucky though – we managed to get through the whole holiday without a single training course.

We’ve been on holiday before but not to this hotel so we didn’t know:

• How these lifts worked
• The procedure for getting new towels
• How the air conditioning worked
• Why it wasn’t safe to bomb into the pool in the shallow end
• How the coffee machine at breakfast worked
• How toasted the toasting machine worked
• etc

But we coped. We spoke to other people who were there, we followed the conventions others had established, we observed the other people there, we read the instruction notices, we asked when we didn’t understand something.
