Musical chairs

The text 'MUSICAL CHAIRS' superimposed on a blurred image of a London tube carriage with seats.

I was on the Tube at the weekend. If you have ever been in London, you’ll have used it and will know it’s silent; people don’t speak to strangers and, even between friends, conversation is muted.

I was with someone but the train we were on didn’t have many seats and those that were available were single and individual so I stood with them, in front of where they were sitting. Another couple boarded the train with us and also wanted to sit. Finding a single seat nearby, the woman of the pair sat. Another person moved seats so the man could sit with her. Another couple realised I was standing and moved down one seat so I could sit with my travelling partner.

No words were spoken, no-one planned what was required; everyone just did what was needed to make the experience better.

Not everything needs instruction. Leaving people to work it out for themselves, relying on their intrinsic knowledge and understanding is often enough.
