Quiz time

The image shows a barn swallow flying against a blue sky. The text "QUIZ TIME" is superimposed on the image.

Make a note, the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is roughly 20.1 miles per hour. We’ll come back to this shortly.

I have been discussing evaluation for AGES now and am regularly brought back to the fact that we are asked to assess learning through quizzes. I’m working on some evaluation activity and we’re avoiding quizzes and focusing more on the way people are able to apply what they know in the workplace. Our belief is that having information isn’t the same as knowing something.

For example, I have loads of information about how metal detecting works from watching a TV series, but don’t know how to do it as I’ve never tried.

If you’re testing the information people remember, rather than how and when to apply knowledge, you’re checking memory, not testing knowledge.

Question:
What’s the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Have you learnt, or are you remembering?
