Just the way you are

I’ve written about labels before and have noticed this week that there seems to be a storm brewing about a current fashionable label – disruption.

I’m not sure if it’s a wave of ‘anti-disruption’ forming or people struggling to define what we believe to be right or wrong as Sukhvinder Pabial so eloquently put yesterday. I occasionally get called disruptive; it’s not a label I’d call myself and it is, to a point, just because I have an unusual approach. Ultimately, my idea of disruptive might be your radical change as much as it could be someone else’s accepted practice. If you get hung up on a label like this, goodness knows what you’d think of words like innovation, engagement or millennial.

So, just for the author of the HR after Dark post, this is for you…

Don’t go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
We like HR to be an old personnel function, your job is to do transactional activity when we ask it.

Don’t imagine you’re too familiar
And I don’t see you anymore
Work is so much more complex now and it’s probably too much for you. We’ll call you when we need you.  Promise.

I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
You helped with all those restructures that saved so much money to get us to where we are. Don’t get any ideas beyond that.

I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times
I’ll take you just the way you are
Most of the time to do what we ask. That’ll do BUT KNOW YOUR PLACE.

Don’t go trying some new fashion
Don’t change the color of your hair
If we want to be innovative we’ll get an interim in so you can stay the same.

You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care
Just because we don’t espouse your virtues doesn’t mean we don’t value you. Honest.

I don’t want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
Yes we need policies but keep them simple.

I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.
HR, you’re my agony aunt.

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
Your function is still the same even if you have a new label.

What will it take ’till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.
I don’t want to see flashy presentations from HR… Would a seat at the top table help?

I said I love you and that’s forever
And this I promise from my heart
I couldn’t love you any better
I love you just the way you are
Disruption is just bad, m’kay?

*cue dimmed lights and people holding each other up at 2.00am as the last notes fade*
