In the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water there’s a General who has overall accountability for the project. A technician asks him to not destroy the “asset” that they have. The General, pointing at the stars on his shoulder replies:
“Count these with me, Son – there’s five of them: That means I can do whatever the hell I want. You wanna plead your case? I’ll listen. But, end of the day, it is my damn decision.”
The clarity of the message is clear and suits the tone of the movie. I wonder how many people are operating in an environment where their managers think the same? More importantly, how do you influence this style of manager if they’re a key leader in your organisation?
