I’ve been talking about moving from a supply-led approach to demand-led one for a while and I’ve not felt is resonates. Supply/demand seem to be terms which some people can’t relate to and some people see it as a marketing/sales issue.
I was lucky to read a piece by the always insightful Richard Millington the other day. In it, he describes how some hosted communities are facing a ‘Retail Moment’ and breaks this down into organisation and user-centric approaches.
For learning, an organisation-centric approach is the supply model, and user-centric is the demand model. An organisation-centric approach is about providing ‘learning’ and content on the platform you’re paying for. The user-centric approach is about supporting people to learn on the platforms they prefer to use.
“But My Organisation Wants Control!”

This makes sense.
Who wouldn’t want control?
The problem is you often trade control for participation. The more control you exercise, the less engagement you might get.
So moving from supply to demand led isn’t the question. It could be how user-centric are you?
It should be how much control do you want to give up?
