Calculated risk

I was told I needed to learn my times tables when I was six because I wouldn’t have a calculator with me all the time.

I was told to learn to remember essential telephone numbers because I wouldn’t be able to get to them immediately if I needed them.

I was told to learn some simple processes when I started work because I’d never have a manual to hand.

I was told to memorise office location codes because I’d never have a branch directory to hand.

I was told to learn routes around London because I’d never have time to read a map.

I was told to learn processing codes because I’d never have a way to check them off site.

Now I have a smartphone, I’m told to put it down because it’s stopping me learning.
