One of the most interesting things in my work is the how many times I hear:
“That’s not how we do things here“
A small phrase that carries a lot of weight; culture in five words. The invisible handbrake which kills new ideas before they take a breath.
It explains why:
- Creativity gets stifled
- Innovation never takes root
- Growth slows and stalls
People rarely fear change itself, it’s what they lose as a result of change. Loss of identity, tradition, comfort, status, expertise or something else.
Often it’s loss of control. But if you don’t challenge how things are done, nothing changes.
The opportunity is to help people see it not as loss but as possibility:
“It IS different from how we do things here. Let’s see what we can learn from it.”
When that shift happens, culture stops being the barrier and starts becoming a launchpad.
