Shhh…it’s quiet

The image shows a close-up portrait of a young woman with curly brown hair. She is looking directly at the camera with a serious expression and has her index finger raised to her lips, suggesting a gesture of silence or discretion.

I had a chat with someone last week and we commented on how quiet things are right now.

It might be down to the time of year; it’s always quieter in the summer months but it feels a bit different right now.

Firstly, it feels like there has been a BIG pause because of ChatGPT and other LLMs. It feels like people are still getting their heads round what they can do, their effectiveness, quality, etc. And when they do look at it, they don’t ‘get’ how they’ll use it. Martin Couzins spotted this the other day:

“But if this is the amazing magical thing that will change everything, why do most people say, in effect, ‘very clever, but not for me’ and wander off, with a shrug? And why hasn’t there been much growth in the active users (as opposed to the vaguely curious) in the last 9-12 months, as shown in a bunch of similar surveys?”

There are economic issues too. The phrase ‘cost of living’ to define the price of life – a hateful phrase – is global. In the UK, growth will almost double in 2025 – from 1% to 1.9%. It’s growth but tiny. There are – and have been – significant elections in some influential Western economies and an uncertain market lacks confidence.

We are still working out how our businesses work. Office or home? Hybrid? What impact does that have on innovation, work life balance and productivity? And how does learning fit into that?

What this means is I’m available and have capacity to help people. That might be through learning conversations, design, strategy, delivery and (unsurprisingly) proving impact. That might be through helping develop managers and leaders, working on critical core skills and understanding how to build capability. That might mean just having a chat and listening to you and what you’re working on.

Get in touch if you think I can help.
